Book Review: Forbidden Magic by Cheyenne McCray

If there’s one thing I hate in the world, it’s not finishing a book. I hate starting a book and not being able to make it all the way through. It drives me nuts.

Forbidden Magic by Cheyenne McCrayBut Forbidden Magic is making me nuttier.

It started out interestingly enough. Spiffy concept, Irish mythology, blah blah blah. But it’s just… poorly written. I’m a grammar psycho; grammatical errors will throw me out of a book faster than you can blink. This book is littered with sentence fragments. Now, I understand that the author is probably sticking them in there for dramatic purposes or for emphasis, but on every third page? Ugh. It’s just as easy, just as emphatic, and more grammatically sound to just stick those fragments after a comma, dammit.

Dear readers, you should know that I have a… thing about character names in romance novels. I hate hate hate the “creative” names that many romance protagonists are given. Lady Winter Raventhorpe? Ambrianna Windsweptmoors? Make me want to stab myself in the eye. So, keeping this tic in mind, I can’t figure out why I picked this book up in the first place. The protagonist’s name is Silver Ashcroft. She has a sister named Copper. Other witches in her coven are named Rhiannon and Cassia. *groans* The manly faerie warrior’s name is Hawk. He has a daughter named Shayla. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t there a pr0n star named Shayla? It’s funny how the most “normal” name throws me out more than the froofy, fluffy names. Shayla. Jesus. I suppose I should thank my lucky stars that there aren’t randomly apostrophed names in here, but really, with the D’Anu coven and the D’Danann warriors…

I made it about halfway through this one, and I’m giving up. It’s just not entertaining enough to keep torturing myself.

goodreads

Anyone on goodreads? It’s spiffy; you add books to be read, books you’re reading, etc, and can review and discuss them with friends.

Here’s my profile. Add me, or point me toward your profile and I’ll add you. :)

How many Mummies do we need, really?

I have a confession to make. I adore The Mummy. I think it’s funny and entertaining, awesomely tongue-in-cheek. Rachel Weisz and John Hannah make the movie, and Brendan Fraser… well, he’s pretty and funny and is good at looking confused. Rachel’s character, Evelyn Carnahan, is one of my favorite movie characters of all time; she’s brilliant, spunky-without-being-obnoxious, and is gloriously absentminded. In other words, Evie is basically me in celluloid form.

So, I was excited when I heard about the second film. I thought it had the potential to start another franchise along the lines of Indiana Jones (though nowhere near as perfect, Indiana Jones and the Golden Walker 4 notwithstanding), a great little line of archaeology comedies. That makes my little geek heart happy.

The Mummy SucksAnd then The Mummy Returns came out. And I began pretending that it doesn’t exist. It’s actually kind of painful to have to mention it here, but I’ll persevere. That Scorpion thingie… we shall never speak of it.

So I’m sure you can imagine my horror when I heard they were making a fourth movie in the franchise, though they’re calling it the third film in the series. Let’s just call it The Mummy’s Trainwreck. First off, they’re again jumping far into the future, like the second film. Second, they’re bringing back Rick and Evie’s bastard of a son, What’s His Name. Only this time, he’s going to be a grown up, and they’re all going to China to battle Jet Li, the Evil Chinese Mummy, and Michelle Yeoh, the Evil Chinese Wizard.

Really, there’s not enough facepalm in the world for this. What the fuck.

But there’s one bright spot in all of this. My beloved Rachel Weisz has gotten the hell out of Dodge. Apparently she found the prospect of more whining from that little craphead kid (in adult form!) as horrifying as I do. Or maybe she was just afraid of having to fight like Egyptian ninja again.

Bonjour!

Ah, the inaugural post. You know, the one where the blogger has no fracking clue what to say, other than, “HERE I AM OMG.”

So… here I am. omg.

The Discriminating Fangirl herselfI’m TDF. I’m a fan, I’m of the female persuasion, and I’m discriminating. So… that would make me The Discriminating Fangirl. :D

I’m 27, have a BA in English, and I hate writing these biography things, heh. So instead, I’ll just blather on a bit about what I’m going to be posting in here. I read loads of books and comics, watch a lot of movies and TV, and I love girly stuff like makeup and perfume. I travel whenever I can afford it, and I like writing. So The Discriminating Fangirl will consist of a whole lot of reviews of a whole lot of random things.

Blather back at me! I’d love to hear your thoughts.
